Work 04 — Surreal Poster

Peach Blossom
Land in a Glass

A surreal Photoshop poster inspired by The Peach Blossom Spring.

It reimagines an ancient Chinese literary utopia as a dreamlike landscape — sealed inside a wine glass, near enough to see, never close enough to touch.

Overview

This project explores how classical Chinese literature can be translated into a contemporary surreal visual language. Taking The Peach Blossom Spring as its source, I built an imaginary landscape inside a wine glass, using digital collage and image manipulation to suggest a poetic escape from reality.

What the viewer sees isn't a drink. It's a separate space — wrapped in light, water and blossom — held still for a moment between someone's fingers.

Inspiration

A utopia is not a fixed place, but a fragile, temporary thing — found by accident, and never found again.

The idea begins at the moment the fisherman stumbles into a hidden paradise. I was less interested in the valley itself than in the feeling around it: that paradise can only be reached through imagination, memory, and a little intoxication — and the instant you reach for it, it slips away.

Visual Metaphor

Annotated detail of the poster

The glass is a boundary between the real and the imagined. Outside, the world stays soft and quiet; inside, the landscape turns vivid and dreamlike — a world you can see, but never fully reach.

Glass— boundary

The transparent edge where reality ends and the dream begins.

Light— threshold

A warm opening at the centre — the way through to somewhere else.

Landscape山水— the dream

Mountains and river: the dreamed world, bright and out of reach.

Boat渔舟— the intruder

The fisherman who drifts in by accident, just as in the story.

Peach Blossoms桃花— the gate

The blossoms that mark the entrance to the hidden valley.

Making Process

The composite, from quiet glass to a world filled with landscape empty glass

Built in Photoshop from many image layers, masks, blending modes and colour adjustments. The work was never in stacking pictures on top of each other — it was in matching the light direction, softening every edge, and balancing transparency until the landscape felt naturally held inside the glass.

Final Outcome

成品

The final poster presents the Peach Blossom Spring as a poetic illusion inside a glass — traditional Chinese imagery meeting surreal digital collage. The mood it lands on is calm, distant, and slightly unreal: a place glimpsed, then gone.

Reflection

反思

Photoshop stopped being an editing tool, and became a way to tell a story.

The hardest and most important part wasn't the layering itself — it was building a believable atmosphere across very different source images, so the final piece could feel emotionally unified rather than simply assembled.
